Nine Emperor Gods in Singapore

Filed under Culture | No Comments

Traveling in Singapore always reveals much more than the last time, and with each visit, it seems as though there are obvious things that were somehow overlooked.  It is a place of many layers, and they continue to reveal themselves in new and exciting ways the more you travel here.  Somehow, when you are in Singapore, it seems like each time, there is something new, and somehow it wasn’t seen the last time, and it’s amazing to see things like this.  It’s not only because the new revelations are so unusual, but also because they were spelled out so clearly, and the clues were always there.  However, it is not uncommon for even the locals to overlook many things, because there is so much to see, and it’s impossible to see it all.

That’s something that’s certainly the result of the multiple cultures that exist here.  Each one has its own signs, traditions, and hidden languages, and when you’re in a place that’s as fantastically baroque as this, it’s impossible for the eye to take in everything, even on a third or fourth look.  So it is that most visitors enjoy the vegetarian restaurants without considering them very much beyond the absolutely delicious food.  Singapore certainly is a lovely place to be hungry, if you can afford the meals, and there are so many places to choose from.  Of course, underneath the scrumptious tastes there are often very sacred beliefs that prohibit the consumption of meat, and this occurs in many of the cultures that are here.

If you can find your way here in October, for the nine days of the Nine Emperor Gods Festival, you’ll want to remember that in this Taoist celebration, it’s necessary to be vegetarian to see certain things.  Being vegetarian doesn’t guarantee entrance, however, and like any religious ceremony, it’s more important to show reverence than to get any kind of special access.  It is nonetheless extremely exciting to be part of it, even as a distant witness, because there is something wonderful happening when the Nine Chairs start to move, possessed by the spirit of the gods who come to earth once a year, and can grant favors for the devout.  Try to get some incense smoke in your hands, and be gentle in all things.

Torremolinos Reference in Monty Python

Filed under Humor, Travel | No Comments

Fritz was a huge Monty Python fan and he knew every film and almost every episode of the Flying Circus by heart. He was also extremely funny and always made his friends and family laugh and almost had an in instinctive knack for balancing borrowed material with his original humor. Last summer his father was sent on a business trip to Torremolinos, Spain for a week. He told Fritz and his mother about the upcoming trip during dinner on the evening following the afternoon he was informed he would be going. Fritz’s mother looked at him with a slightly puzzled expression because she had never heard of the city and thought it was odd he would be going to Spain as he had never before been sent there. Fritz, however, immediately began quoting phrases from the Travel Agent sketch in a Flying Circus Episode.

The following day, after hours and a previous night before of being begged by Fritz to go along with his father his mother investigated the city of Torremolinos and found out that it was actually an extremely popular tourist destination in Spain. She discovered that it is located right on the Mediterranean Coast, or actually it is on the Costa del Sol as Fritz informed her. The more she found out about the city the more she was interested in making the business trip a family vacation and talked to Fritz’s father that night about the idea. They all agreed it would be a great trip and made their reservations in one of the hotels Torremolinos.

Before she agreed to do this, however, she made Fritz promise to stop quoting Monty Python, at least until the trip was over. He agreed, of course, but then immediately threatened to taunt them a second time. It was a reference his mother didn’t understand. Fritz, however, did slow down on the quotes and only occasionally inserted them into his comments when they were contextually appropriate. The trip turned out to be a great vacation for Fritz and his mother and even his father was able to enjoy some quality time with them at the beach when his business meetings were finished.

Austin’s Rude Mechs

Filed under Travel | No Comments

Throw a stone and you’re likely to hit an art gallery or a performance art space in Austin, Texas.  Long known for its music scene, over time, the city has contained about fifty theatrical companies and over thirty art galleries.  While I’ve been to this city several times, staying at one of the hotels Austin has on Congress Street, one of which President Lyndon Baines Johnson held an inaugural ball, I’ve only checked out a handful of theatre shows here.  Most of the time, I may be found down at Mozart’s, a popular coffee house, and which I highly recommend, not only for its coffee, but its deserts.  You can accomplish a great deal of work there, too, if you bring a laptop, sitting inside its large glass enclosed table area with a view of Austin Town Lake.  At least one theater company you shouldn’t miss if they happen to be performing when you are in town is The Rude Mechanicals.

The Rude Mechanicals, also known as the Rude Mechs, is ensemble based, creating collaboratively new works for the stage.  Part of their mission statement is to develop new voices for the theater, fostering young theatre artists, and form with other artists alliances, not just in Austin but nationally and internationally.  Since 1995, they’ve created over 22 original theatrical productions in a number of broad ranging styles, many of which, I’m betting, most people will be unfamiliar — styles such as Low-Fi or Agit-Prop, Lec-Dems to Romantic-Era, to Closet Dramas, and so on.  They’re style is often very physical, almost acrobatic, with an emphasis on visuals.  In its decade-plus of performances, the group has received more than one hundred and seventy local and national nominations and awards for the work.

The group has just closed their latest work, Dionysus in 69, which was a work built on John Cage’s ideas of “life as theater” and chance, as well as radical approaches to art as illustrated by painter Allan Kaprow.  This Rude Mech work attempted to illustrate the axioms contained in Kaprow’s manifesto for theater, Six Axioms for Environmental Theater, first proposed in 1967.  Their next work, currently in production, is I’ve Never Been So Happy, which has been described as a smart 21st century theatrical valentine to Texas.  Heady and diverse stuff.  The Rude Mechanicals goal, though, is to use a collaborative approach to produce politically and socially conscious work, to mix the artistic genres.  While this seems all very esoteric, the result is something lively and entertaining and more often than not, an evening to seek out whenever you’re in Austin.

The Perfect Wedding Jewelery in Singapore

Filed under Wedding | No Comments

All women getting married in Singapore will want her special day to be memorable, and if you’ve ever planned a wedding, then you are perfectly aware that there are many things to be taken care of, including choosing the bride’s jewelry. Jewelry for a wedding will help create an exquisite and lovely appearance, and will enhance the wedding dress by making the bride and the dress even more beautiful. The bride needs to take her time when sorting through the many options when it comes to choosing the best wedding jewelry Singapore companies can offer for her special day.

At first glance at the different choices of suitable wedding jewelry, the bride needs to take into account her wedding gowns style, color and type. If she hasn’t selected a dress yet, she then needs to before picking any wedding jewelry. For example, is the wedding is to held on the beach, it would be very noticeable that she’s wearing pieces that would be suited for a more formal affair, or she might be having a traditional wedding and wearing a traditional wedding gown, but the jewelery she picked might be to big and overwhelm the dress, or the jewelery might be too small and understated. Also, if her wedding dress is full of Swarovski Crystals, sequins, ribbons or other enhancements, a pair of earrings and a single strand of pearls wouldn’t look right. Wedding dresses that have extensive embellishments need to be accompanied by elaborate wedding jewelry. A wedding dress with a plunging neckline will be best suited with a lavaliere; a Victorian wedding dress will be best suited with wedding jewelry from that time period.

The earrings are just as important and the necklace, they will draw attention to the face and hair, plus add a dash of sparkle to the brides eyes. As for the hairstyle, wedding jewelry might be consider here as well, such as wedding tiara’s if the hairstyle is an up-do, or an embellished headband with sewn crystal ribbons draping down through her long hair, or wrapped around lovely braids.

It’s important before picking any wedding jewelry, to have already picked a wedding dress, a hair style and then the wedding jewelry will fall into place to produce a beautiful bride on her wedding day.

Swift Ranks and Defining Moments

Filed under Music | No Comments

It does seem to happen to everyone who has had their go at fame, when they find themselves living in the middle of their own cultural moment.  When all eyes are on them, watching what they’ll do, they take the moment and do small actions that change history forever.  One moment they are practically unknown to the world, and then suddenly, a swift rank increase in their position on the charts, whatever those particular charts happen to be.  It’s always a joy to be present at such moments, and there are stories that can last a lifetime.

That moment when Pete Townshend decided to smash his guitar was one action that sent waves throughout the world, and things would never be the same after that.  Those Who fans who had been following the group long before could see certain patterns developing, of course, and the moment didn’t come out of the blue.  There was a fierceness in their playing, as well as the songwriting, and it was obvious that Townshend knew some important things about showmanship.  He knew how to work a crowd from a very young age.  Even now, looking back at their early footage, we don’t see a young rock and roller caught up in the energy, we see someone who is carefully calculating the effects of his actions, and making decisions.

A similar moment happens in New York City, when David Byrne, the eternal adolescent, gangly and uncomfortable with his own body, decides to start mimicking the jerky dances he’s been observing.  Some of the people at the CBGB’s that night would claim that he was only trying to prove that he really couldn’t dance.  But to the rest of the world, it was a moment when the performer decided to embody all of the energy of the audience and give it back to them.  What shifted here was a very important thing, because he wasn’t simply becoming the romantic hero, being brave or furious in front of a large group of people.  Rather, he was showing us who we were at that moment, and we were nervous, edgy, upset, and frustrated.  It was disturbing to see ourselves like that, but at the same time, it felt good.  Because we were recognized, and our own inner turmoil was so profound to the moment that it was worthy of being represented. These gestures of frustration speak as loud as any spectacle, and often times, it is the attitude itself that is more important than the sparks and the smoke.

Singapore Sea Stories

Filed under Travel | No Comments

It’s impossible to spend even a moment in Singapore without picking up at least a small taste of its magic.  It has a magnificently contemporary cultural scene, and is one of the most cosmopolitan places in the world.  There is a kind of fascination with pop culture here that is coupled with a splendid sense for the best in high art.  This combination makes for a fascinating  destination, where travelers will find many exciting distractions.  Many cultures collide and come together here, and the products are evident in the design, in the art, and in the cuisine.  Through all of these, there is also a terrific sense of local flavor, which speaks to a blend of the East and the West, and world-views that are truly at the forefront of global culture.

In the cuisine, there are reflections of the multiple cultures that make up the population of this island city state.  There is always a tremendous variety of foods to choose from, making it a kind of diner’s paradise.  Because of its geography, of course, seafood restaurants are particularly sumptuous, with a ready supply of fresh fish always near at hand.  If your hunger for the sea is not satisfied by the food, you might want to visit the nearby islands of Subar Laut and Subat Darat, the Sister Islands.

Of course, you may also decide to listen to some local stories about these islands, and save the travel costs in favor of eating more Singapore seafood.  There is certainly more than one story about their creation, but the favorite one goes something like this.  Two sisters, Minah and Lina loved each other dearly, and never wanted to be separated.  When a band of pirates were passing through, a certain sailor saw Minah and fell in love with her immediately, and kidnapped her so he could marry her.  Mortified, she threw herself off the boat and into the sea.  Lina, upon hearing the news, threw herself into the sea as well.  The sisters were never found, and instead, these two islands rose up where they drowned.  Every year, on the day of their death, there are storms and rain on the island, because the universe itself is still in mourning.

Freshening Up Your Home for the Holidays

Filed under Home & Garden | No Comments

Many people will be inviting guests and loved one to their homes this holiday season, and due to the festive atmosphere, many also tend to find that it is the perfect time to do a little re-vamping on your home decor.  Not in the way of big, time consuming or expensive projects, but just in little ways that will make their homes more welcoming and filled with spirit.  You may decide to spruce up your windows with festive colors of shades from Next Day Blinds.  These will create the perfect frame around the beautifully lit Christmas tree.

If repainting your entire room seems too much of a task with all the other holiday planning you have to do, consider changing and updating the paint on your doors and on the floorboards, or perhaps just one wall to serve as the backdrop behind the tree.  A newly painted garage door will look lovely when lit by the outside lights around your house, which is a great way to create the effect of renovation with very little time or money invested.  This is also the time to clean out the cupboards and get rid of old things, a great way to start the New Year.

If you have wishes to update your furniture, but do not have the extra money, a beautifully colored throw blanket with a few accent pillows will do wonders until the time when you can afford to do more serious updates.  Creating decorative art to hang for the holidays is another way to not only personalize your holiday decorations, and a wonderful project for children, keeping them busy while you are planning your holiday dinner parties.  Adding color and fun to your house does not have to be stressful or costly.  With the new colors on the walls, and the windows framed with Next Day Blinds, your house will be updated and the atmosphere will be festive, long after the holiday season has come to end for the year.

Spas and the Stone Age in Montecatini Terme

Filed under Travel | No Comments

If you want to go to a spa and spend time in a region that has a history dating literally back to the Stone Age, then you might try one of the Montecatini Terme hotels.  Today, Montecatini Terme is known for its tourism and its spa, although this Medieval town can record its history from the Mesolithic period, although most likely, the area contained nomadic hunters since the Paleolithic era (for those interested, the time periods are as follows: Paleolithic [35,000-10,000 B.C.], Mesolithic [7,000-4,000 B.C.] and Neolithic [4,000-1,500 B.C.]).

Montecatini Terme is set in the hills of the Valdinievole.    In the 14th Century, Florence’s plans to dominate the area was slowed by the revolt of the Ghibellines.  The leader of this revolt, Uguccione of Faggiola, in 1312, was the imperial vicar and master of Lucca and Pisa, which led to the war that would decide the future fate of Tuscany.  Three years later, in 1315, Uguccione of Faggiola tried to attack Montecatini, which was considered a stronghold, because of its location.  The siege failed.  However, on August 29 of that year, Uguccione took the Guelfi army by surprise, leaving in his wake casualties and prisoners numbering in the thousands.  In the next year, Uguccione fled and Castruccio Castracani of Antelminelli replaced him.  Over time, though Florence fought to regain its power in an attempt to recpature the town of Montecatini.  Over a hundred years later, in 1530, the baths were built to hold the spa waters.  From these turbulent times, the town grew to become what it is today:  The town gathered restaurants and theaters and a casino.  Toward the end of the 1800s and the early part of the 1900s, celebrities began to travel to the town, and it became known as a meeting place for the well known, like Giuseppe Verdi and Luigi Pirandello, so much so that now the town is linked by its thermal spas and a number of personalities.  Here are just a few.

See if you recognize anyone: Galileo Chini, a painter; Alessandro Bicchierai, a doctor and scientist; Natalino Mucci, a painter;  Dino Scalabrino, a doctor; Tiziano Panconi, an art historian; Raouil Bellandi, the founder of Montecatini Sporting Club; Romulus Diecidue, a teacher and politician; Peter Grocco, a doctor; Sirio Maccioni, an internationally known restaurant owner.

The Spa of the Imagination

Filed under Health | No Comments

Imagination plays an extremely important part in human consciousness.  It opens up ideas and memories, allowing the mind to start to create scenarios and circumstances, and flow in a kind of directed meditation, often without a goal or a source, and it can be very pleasant, to be sure, but it’s also a sign of a very healthy mind.  Perhaps we need to daydream just as much as we need to dream, and perhaps no one will ever know exactly why this is.  But there are ways of getting yourself to a point where pleasant daydreaming is possible again, and these techniques are the same as for mediation and relaxation.

When you’re looking for the perfect personal spa, and going through the incredible selection offered by choosehottubsdirect.com, you might not be thinking of imagination exactly, but chances are pretty good that relaxation is on your mind.  They are, in fact, a perfectly splendid way to relax, putting the body into a calm and tranquil state so that the mind can start to unwind at the end of a busy day.  This is also the perfect time for the imagination to open up again, and start to do its magic.

The point where the mind stops obsessing over all the responsibilities and tasks of the day is the part where you can actually start to think clearly.  Ironically, it’s the perfect state to be in to make good decisions.  So your spa might become the place where you go to think things through, when you need to sort through options in some of life’s more challenging moments, to come up with the solution that is exactly right for you at the time.  It can also be the place where you go to let thinking quiet down, so the mind is free to wander wherever it needs to go, and make up the stories that make up an inner life.
