Zhang Xiaogang in Singapore

Filed under Travel | No Comments

Singapore has style.  It has an unusually well tuned sense of what’s hot and interesting in the realms of art, fashion, and design, and seems to be just a bit ahead of the rest of the world.  The rich urban culture here is always moving, and always with a little bit of grace and pizazz.  Staying at a Singapore hotel resort, then, is one of the best ways to see this city-state, so that the exquisite sense of style will follow you from your doorstep and back to your pillow at night.  Luxury accommodations can make a wonderful place even more elegant, and we offer a new adventure in luxury travel.  It’s a joy to see a place as spectacular as Singapore when you are feeling refreshed in body and spirit, and we don’t expect any less.

If you like adventure, you’ll surely love Singapore.  There are always fabulous choices for things to do, day and night.  There are excellent attractions here that will please travelers of all ages, and the night life is fascinating if your tastes are more for after dark.  The gallery scene is formidable, offering a stunning array of contemporary art from all over the world, and it won’t be long before you come to realize that Singapore’s claims to be an international center are absolutely true. At local galleries here like Soobin Art International you can see a stunning variety of work, with artists working in many different mediums, aligned with different schools of art, from all over the world.

Here you can see some of the magnificent work by Beijing-based artist Zhang Xiaogang.  Born in 1958, he is a product of the Cultural Revolution, he admits, and his compelling works comment on this.  They are surreal cartoon portraits of middle class families, and there is an incredible delicate balance here that suggests an enormous turbulence just beneath the surface of these faces, that is unable to escape.  It makes for a visceral emotional tension that is also strangely magnetic, and his acclaimed work has an enormous impact when you can see it up close.

Alliance Francaise de Singapour

Singapore is one of the most interesting places on the planet.  With a thriving urban lifestyle that is one of the truly metropolitan places in the world, there are always plenty of things to do for visitors.  It’s one of the places that’s always had a great blend of innovation and tradition in the cultural forms, but in recent years, has become something of a tourists’ haven.  The art in Singapore has become very international in style and sensibility, and it’s an exciting place to see new work.  Nightlife is truly spectacular in Singapore.  Restaurant culture is also very much alive and well, and when you eat here, you start to recognize that it’s history as a port town is very much evident in the variety of cuisines.

Our restaurants are selected from the best of the best, so that you’ll have a chance to sample and savor the best in international and local fare.  After a wonderful meal in our spectacular restaurants, it’s a perfect time to see Singapore, and one of the best ways to know a place is through its art.  One of the most interesting places to see Singapore in its intercultural best is at the Alliance Francaise de Singapour.  This organization began as a French language school in the late 1940s, and was actually closer to a social club.  Over the years, it went through many incarnations, and kept growing and evolving.

Today, it is still a language school, but a whole lot more.  Every year they jury a show for new French and Singapore artists, and have some amazing exhibitions all year long.  It’s not always about showcasing French and Singapore works, but the themes are always transcultural, and the art is exquisite.  Another draw here is a cinema club, where visitors can see French films subtitled in English.  It’s a fascinating way to spend an evening, and a social club that continues to serve many functions.

Dinner Parties and Hot Tubs

Filed under Food, Home & Garden | No Comments

Spas are great.  Hot tubs are fantastic.  When one chooses to have a spa from choosehottubsdirect.com installed they are making a decision to put health and pleasure at home in their own backyard.  Family and friends will enjoy it on a festival occasion, and you will enjoy it on a nightly occasion.  At the end of the day, the best way to unwind and just hang, is in a big tub of bubbling water, jets hitting the small of your back, and the wind and the nature surrounding.

This can happen each and every night, when you choose to incorporate a spa into the design of you backyard.  This can be a private retreat, orsanctuary , wherein you can listen to beautiful piano tunes created by a best friend living far away, or you can invite the entire neighborhood over for a backyard barbecue party.  It’s your choice.  Quiet nights at home, or weekly hot tub parties.  There are no limitations to the imagination when considering a gathering of friends.  The theme of a hot tub party could revolve.  In college we had dinner parties, each one focusing on the cuisine of a particular region.  We did not have a hot tub at the time, but if we did, things may have been more interesting.

They would have been more relaxing in the end that’s for certain.  Planning dinner parties, well it is fun, but it is taxing as well.  It would have been the perfect ending, to many a perfect night.  That said, each and every time one chooses to soak in a hot tub, they are taking care of their mental and physical well-being.  Not only will soaking serve to rejuvenate , it will serve to relax.  A much needed respite from the daily here and there, to the nightly after-party clean up.  Next time there is a dinner party, there will be a hot tub involved, especially because now, years later, there is one…in my own backyard.
